Counterpart International is seeking a qualified and experienced Accountant to support the USDA Food for Progress – Kenya Livestock Innovation and Feed Transformation Project. The project aims to expand trade and increase agricultural productivity by improving the quality of livestock feed.
Under the guidance and supervision of the Director of Finance and Risk Management, the Accountant will be responsible for project accounting and financial management. The role requires a detail-oriented professional with strong experience in accounting, bookkeeping, financial reporting, and compliance with US Government regulations.
Key Responsibilities

Prepare and process project payments

Prepare and review project office accounting and financial reports

Ensure complete, accurate financial reports and supporting documentation are submitted to the US office and external parties as required

Record financial transactions in Counterpart’s accounting system

Ensure project accounting books are submitted monthly by the 5th of the following month, or in line with deadlines set by US Finance

Maintain complete and accurate financial records and files
-
File vouchers and financial documents in Counterpart’s records repository

Resolve external audit and internal review findings (including project voucher reviews) within 90 days or earlier if required

Track sub-ledger balances, including staff receivables such as outstanding travel advances, and follow up to ensure timely liquidation

Assist with payroll calculations

Assist with tax and social security calculations, reporting, and submission of statutory withholdings to government authorities

Support preparation and updating of project budget projections on a monthly basis or as required

Support the project’s financial start-up activities

Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Experience
-
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (professional accounting certification is an added advantage)

Minimum of five (5) years’ relevant experience in accounting and finance, preferably with international development organisations
(A Master’s degree may be considered in lieu of work experience) -
At least two (2) years’ accounting experience on US Government-funded programmes

Strong knowledge of US Government grants, contracts, or cooperative agreements, including billing processes

Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel

Experience using accounting software; QuickBooks and/or Microsoft Dynamics NAV preferred

Ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, set priorities, and complete tasks effectively

Strong service-oriented approach and ability to work respectfully with colleagues and external stakeholders
-
Fluency in English and Swahili is required
